The aim of the chronological bibliography given below is to give a complete record of Professor J.R.R. Tolkien's published writings: books, contributions to books, and contributions to periodicals. Some exceptions have had to be made to this stated intent, mainly for practical reasons. Thus the categories given below have been excluded.
Lastly it might be noted that, even if exact publishing dates for the vast majority of the publications listed below can be ascertained (largely through information taken from Hammond 1993), I have preferred to give the works in alphabetical order within each year rather than in chronological order.
After a hiatus of some eleven years this bibliography has finally seen a much needed and long overdue update. Apart for adding some 25 new entries for the period 2004-2014 numerous old entries have been revised, especially those concerned with the new edition from 2014 of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.
Among the books added to this edition is The Art of The Hobbit (edited by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull). This has been listed as it contains reproductions of illustrations not included in Pictures or Wayne Hammond & Christina Scull: J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator.
It should perhaps also be noted that I have postponed adding some books for further consideration. These include books with quotes from unpublished academic writings by Tolkien such as The Keys of Middle-earth by Stuart D. Lee and Elizabeth Solopova.
Finally it might be noted that even if I have added the 2005 edition of Tom Shippey's The Road to Middle-earth to the list of sources no page references for this edition have so far been given to the reprints of poems from Songs for the Philologists.
A few corrections of this document were made on 29th December 2014, among them giving the correct page information for "Tha Eadigan Saelidan" in A Northern Venture.
Link to the 8th edition of this bibliography.
This new edition lists the contents of the latest volume of Parma Eldalamberon and also notes the publishing of an abbreviated version of John D. Rateliff's A History of The Hobbit as well as correcting the entry for the 1966 version of Tolkien's translation of "The Book of Jonah".
In the Introductory note to the 8th edition I noted that some books had been postponed pending further consideration. These still remain so. To this list could be added the pocket edition of Smith of Wootton Major, edited by Verlyn Flieger and published in February 2015. As I do not yet have been able to check a copy of this I do not know if this differs in any way from her previous edition of the book published in 2005, which would merit the new edition being noted.
Link to the 9th edition of this bibliography.
As noted above I was uncertain in July 2015 concerning the contents of the new edition of The Story of Kullervo, edited by Verlyn Flieger. Thus I have hastened to update this bibliography once this book has been published. In the end the edition of "The Story of Kullervo" proved to be largely unchanged from the version already published in Tolkien Studies (according to Verlyn Flieger's Foreword, p. vii, this has meant for her an "opportunity to refine my first transcription of the manuscript, restore inadvertent omissions, emend conjectural readings, and correct typos that found their way into print"). The editorial apparatus has been extended with a new Introduction (pp. ix-xxiii), partly based on the much briefer one in Tolkien Studies (pp. 211-214) while the concluding essay, "Tolkien, Kalevala, and 'The Story of Kullervo'" (pp. 133-163) is reprinted from Verlyn Flieger's collection Green Suns and Faërie: Essays on J.R.R. Tolkien (2012). The book-length edition also adds five facsimiles from Tolkien's manuscripts as well as a painting by Tolkien, "The Land of Pohja" (in two versions).
Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
Revised editions: New York: Ballantine Books, 1965. A further
revised edition was published by Allen & Unwin in 1966. Further
corrections were made in later British editions. A try to amalgamate all the
changes in British editions together with some corrections that only appeared
in the Ballantine edition was made in the American edition of 1987 (Boston,
Md.: Houghton Mifflin Co.) A British edition of this, further revised, was
published in 1994 (London: HarperCollinsPublishers).
